My Research

I am a medical entomologist working at the University of Melbourne.

I study how mosquito populations move through and adapt to urban environments and how these dynamics influence disease transmission risk. A key focus of my work is Aedes notoscriptus, a widespread container-breeding mosquito implicated in local transmission of pathogens in southeastern Australia, including its potential role in Buruli ulcer ecology.

My research integrates field ecology, population genomics, and experimental approaches to quantify mosquito dispersal, population structure, and host interactions. I also evaluate innovative vector control strategies, including autodissemination-based approaches and other biocontrol tools aimed at reducing mosquito populations in domestic and peri-domestic habitats.

I am very passionate about science communication and strongly believe that research should be accessible beyond academic journals and conferences. A major part of my work involves translating complex topics in mosquito biology, disease ecology, and public health into content that is engaging, understandable, and relevant to the wider community.

Through my research, I regularly communicate about topics including mosquito-borne diseases, Buruli ulcer, urban mosquito ecology, and emerging vector control strategies. I enjoy connecting everyday experiences (like getting bitten by mosquitoes in your backyard) to the broader ecological and public health processes happening around us.

My work has been featured through outlets including Pursuit, University of Melbourne and national media such as The Guardian Australia.

I am also on several social media platforms, particularly Instagram, TikTok and YouTube under the handle @mozzienique, to share fieldwork, laboratory research, mosquito biology, and behind-the-scenes aspects of scientific research.
